NMU College of Business Announces Semester Events

Northern Michigan University’s College of Business has announced its winter semester schedule of events. Most will involve Upper Peninsula business professionals and employers; some are open to community members. All events are free and require advance registration, unless otherwise indicated.

Thursday, Feb. 4: NMU students are invited to attend “Getting on the ‘Short List’ Through Your Job Interview,” presented by Greg Utken from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the University Center Charcoal Room. Utken has interviewed more than 400 students applying for jobs and will share his tips for becoming a “no-brainer” candidate. No pre-registration required.

Wednesday, Feb. 10: Speed Interviewing, 6-9 p.m. in the Peter White Lounge of the University Center. This fast-paced event gives NMU students an opportunity to improve their interviewing skills and career preparation while networking with area business representatives serving as interviewers.

Wednesday, March 30: Marketing and Entrepreneurship Panel Luncheon, noon to 2 p.m. in the Ontario Room of the University Center. Students will learn about career opportunities and ask questions of regional marketing and entrepreneurship professionals.

Thursday, March 31: New Business Venture Competition, Explorer Rooms of the University Center. Student finalists will pitch their ideas to a panel of judges and compete for funding to assist in getting their business ideas off the ground. The event includes a trade fair from 1-2 p.m., elevator pitch competition from 2-2:15, business plan presentations from 2:15-5:30, informal judge feedback at 5:30 p.m. and a closing reception at 6. Thursday, April 7: U.P. Business Careers Event, 5-7 p.m. in the University Center Great Lakes Rooms. This event is designed for U.P. employers and graduating business students who would like to find employment in the region. Refreshments will be served.

            Thursday, April 21: Kevat Juhla (spring celebration), 6 p.m. social hour and 7 p.m. dinner in the University Center Explorer Rooms. Supporters of the NMU College of Business are encouraged to attend. Free registration required. Donations accepted.

            Friday, April 22: Scholarship and Awards Breakfast, 8-10 a.m. in the University Center Michigan/Ontario Rooms. This annual invitation-only event honors student achievement and will be followed by a meeting of the Dean’s Advisory Council.
