Northern Michigan University will host the 23rd annual “Learning to Walk Together” Traditional Pow Wow, with doors opening at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 12, in Vandament Arena. Grand entries will be at noon and 6 p.m. The pow wow feast will take place from 4-6 p.m. at the NMU Jacobetti Complex. Admission is $5 for the general public and free for NMU students with an NMU ID. The pow wow begins with the grand entry and the flag song, followed by the veterans’ honor song. All veterans—male and female and Native and non-Native –are all honored this way. The emcee will provide information on the dances, which include male and female traditional dances; jingle dress and grass dance; and male and female fancy dance. Social dances such as inter-tribal, round dance and two-step will also be featured and the audience is invited to participate. Artisan and vendor booths will offer a variety of craft items, reference materials and food.

The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community provided financial support for the event. NMU’s Native American Student Association is hosting, with coordinated help from the American Indian Science and Engineering Society and the Native American Language and Culture Club.
