Folk Music School Registration Opens
Registration has opened for the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center's inaugural Folk Music School for high school students, to be held July 17-21 at Northern Michigan University. Interested students can register for the camp and see more information at folkmusicschool.nmu.edu.
The cost is $200 for students who elect to commute to campus each day or $400 for those who choose to stay in the NMU residence halls during the camp. Students will be asked to choose a specific instrument for tailored instruction. Lessons will be available for accordian, fiddle, guitar, banjo, upright bass and possibly more, based on demand. Students also will select either the instrumental or singer-songwriter track. Each will have a specific curriculum related to the student’s chosen discipline.
Instruction will be provided by NMU faculty and staff members with extensive backgrounds in American folk music. Local folk musicians will lead lessons or classes on specific instruments. Students who plan to stay for the Hiawatha Traditional Music Festival at the end of the week will have an opportunity to take part in workshops and featured performances at the festival.
