Amer Mansoor of Bloomfield Hills received the 2016 Northern Michigan University Board of Trustees’ Outstanding Male Graduating Senior Award. 

Mansoor recently graduated summa cum laude, completing both NMU’s pre-med program and the requirements for a bachelor’s degree in communication studies. He was also selected as the student commencement speaker. 

Mansoor was an undergraduate researcher at the Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center, a collaboration of NMU and U.P. Health System Marquette. He also spent each summer doing research at the Karmanos Cancer Institute at St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital. 

While attending NMU, Mansoor was involved with the Pre-Med Club and ASNMU, the student government organization. He served as a news anchor for the “Public Eye News” televised production. He also established the Muslim Student Association to build unity amoung fellow students and to raise awareness and dispel misconceptions of Islam.

Mansoor applied to 30 undergraduate programs that offered guaranteed acceptance into medical school after completion of the pre-med program. He chose NMU, which offers MedStart in partnership with Wayne State University School of Medicine. He will begin medical school at WSU this fall. 

The NMU Board of Trustees presents four achievement awards annually to recognize students for their significant contributions to the quality of life at NMU through involvement in extra-curricular activities or through work in a university department.
