Barnes & Noble College Completes First Week of Bookstore Operation

Friday 24, 2016

The new Barnes & Noble at NMU Bookstore wrapped up its first week of operation. Perhaps the most noticeable change is the pervasiveness of the new NMU logos on signage and available products. The store has not had any structural renovations at this point—just fresh paint on the pillars near the entrances—but it appears roomier. Manager Paul Wright attributes this to “remerchandising,” or adjusting sight lines through the strategic placement of products and fixtures. For example, some items formerly on fixtures are now displayed on the slotted walls, freeing up additional floor space.

NMU students or employees who download the Barnes & Noble College app can receive 25 percent off one clothing purchase. The app is particularly helpful for students in logging textbook orders or rentals and sending notifications when they’re ready for pickup. Wright said the textbook rental selection has increased, with 90 percent of summer term books including a rental price. Barnes & Noble College developed a Yuzu app that enables on-the-spot digital downloads of books, either for permanent purchase or for a 180-day rental.

While rebranding the bookstore under the Barnes & Noble name continues to evolve, some previous policies remain in place. NMU faculty and staff continue to receive 20 percent discounts off books and 10 percent off other items, with some exclusions. Wright said he will also be working with the company’s marketing staff on promotions tied to athletic events that will be linked through social media and the website.

Wright said mentors from other Barnes & Noble College bookstores in the Midwest have been on campus offering guidance on various facets of the operation.
