Members of the Northern Michigan University Foundation Board of Trustees recently contributed more than $28,000, including a challenge gift from an anonymous trustee, to endow a new scholarship for incoming freshmen. 

“The foundation board has been working with the university to find ways to offer new financial opportunities for students while also supporting recruitment efforts," said Mark Pynnonen, president of the NMU Foundation Board of Trustees. "Since there is always a need for privately-funded scholarships for incoming freshmen, we are proud to offer additional financial support for students who are considering kicking off their careers here at Northern.”

Of the donated funds, $25,000 will be used to endow the NMU Foundation Board of Trustees Freshman Endowed Scholarship. The remainder will be used to provide student awards until the endowment earnings fund the scholarship in accordance with NMU Foundation policy.

Eligible candidates must be full-time, incoming freshmen of any major with a grade-point average of 2.5 or better. The Admissions Department Selection Committee will recommend qualified students to the Financial Aid Office for final review and approval. The amount and number of the awards may vary from year to year and are subject to the NMU Foundation Spending Policy.
