NMU Engineering Technology Programs Accredited
Northern Michigan University’s degree programs in mechanical engineering technology and electrical engineering technology have been accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET, the global accreditor of college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering and engineering technology.
ABET accreditation assures that programs meet standards to produce graduates ready to enter critical technical fields that are leading the way in innovation and emerging technologies, and in anticipating the welfare and safety needs of the public.
“ABET accreditation demonstrates our commitment to providing students with a quality education and ensures that our programs remain current,” said Mike Rudisill, engineering technology department head. “It also provides an added value to our alumni, who can assure potential employers that they are graduates from one of the premier engineering technology programs in the country. This is a great testament to the efforts of our dedicated faculty and our world-class labs that the university has outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment.”
Rudisill said one of the most visible and immediate benefits of ABET accreditation is the ability to obtain a professional engineering license with NMU’s degree. A number of graduates have attained the license. Having the certification also allows NMU students to apply for engineering jobs within the federal government. He said a May graduate is now working as an engineer for the US Corps of Engineers.
ABET’s voluntary peer-review process adds critical value to academic programs in the engineering disciplines, where quality, precision and safety are of the utmost importance. Developed by technical professionals from member societies, ABET accreditation criteria focus on what students experience and learn. Its accreditation reviews look at program curricula, faculty, facilities and institutional support. They are conducted by teams of professionals from industry, academia and government, with expertise in engineering and engineering technology.
