Marquette Ranks Among Safest College Towns

Saturday 10, 2016

Safety can be part of the college selection criteria for many students and their parents. Northern Michigan University’s home base of Marquette is the 21st safest college town in America, according to a ranking released by The SafeWise Report. Security experts from SafeWise evaluated the most recent FBI crime statistics available. They coupled that data with their own research on safety-related programs and initiatives, culminating in 2016’s “50 Safest College Towns in America.”

The Marquette description on the SafeWise website reads: “Known as the educational, healthcare, recreation and retail center of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Marquette is the ideal home for Northern Michigan University’s students. The city is a major Lake Superior port and works hard to keep residents safe both on land and sea. In addition to a city-sponsored Waterfront Safety Task Force, Marquette's police department provides rescue/dive teams, a snowmobile patrol and officers dedicated to relations with schools and the city’s youth. The NMU Public Safety and Police Services department also provides swim safety information and resources for students who can’t resist the local beachfront.”
