Northern Michigan University’s Siril Endowment for the Music Arts seeks to increase students’ awareness of and appreciation for classical music through world-class performances. It will sponsor a new series of campus screenings of Royal Opera and Royal Ballet productions filmed in London and projected in high definition in Jamrich Hall’s state-of-the-art auditorium. The privately funded endowment will also support an artist residency at NMU.

The schedule for the academic year follows. All performances are free for NMU students with ID and $15 for adults. They will be held at 5 p.m. in 1100 Jamrich Hall.

Sunday, Oct. 16: Two complementary works, “Cavalleria rusticana” by Pietro Mascagni and “Pagliacci” by Ruggero Leoncavallo, tell dark tales of passionate love that sours to violent jealousy.

Sunday, Nov. 13: The Royal Ballet production of the quintessential romantic ballet, “Giselle,” is based on the classic version first staged in St. Petersburg in 1884.

Sunday, Feb. 12, 2017: Modest Mussorgsky’s only completed opera, “Boris Godunov,” features a towering central character, a tsar whose power and vulnerability combine in one of the greatest bass-baritone roles in the canon.

Sunday, April 9, 2017: The Royal Ballet production of “Frankenstein” is a period adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Gothic tale of morality and craving for love, companionship and understanding.

An artist residency is scheduled on campus March 25-April 1, 2017. More information on the featured musical group will be released at a later date.
