NMU Screens Award-Winning Royal Opera Production
Northern Michigan University will present a high-definition screening of Damiano Michieletto’s award-winning Royal Opera House production of Cavalleria tusticana/ Pagliacci on Sunday, Oct. 16. The complementary works tell dark tales of passionate love that sours to violent jealousy. Michieletto has updated the setting to the late-20th century in a poverty-stricken village in southern Italy. The screening begins at 5 p.m. in the Jamrich Hall auditorium.
Characters from each short opera interact with their counterparts in the other piece. The production features a world-class cast including Aleksandrs Antonenko, Carmen Giannattasio and Eva-Maria Westbroek. It won the Best New Opera Production at the 2016 Oliver Awards.
The NMU showing is funded by the Siril Endowment for the Music Arts, which seeks to increase student awareness of and appreciation for classical/concert music. It is free for NMU students with ID and $15 for the general public. Following the broadcast, an open discussion period will be held in the lobby.
