Carl Holm Memorial

Carl Holm spent 42 years working in Housing & Residence Life at Northern Michigan University, first as a Hal Director, then as an Assistant Dean for Quad I (Payne, Halverson, Gant and Spalding Halls), followed by 27 years as the Director of Housing & Residence Life. For Carl, it was a labor of love. Carl passed away on February 23, 2019.

Student development was at the core of Carl’s tenure in Housing & Residence life. His “Live, Learn, Lead” initiative survives today as a means for developing student leaders who positively impact the campus today and will be positive forces in their future communities following graduation. Community development was a passion for Carl and the positive communities that flourished at the “house” level under his direction and support continue to exist today.

Carl had time for everyone and had a sincere interest in their experiences, stories, and lives. It is not a stretch to say that Carl had a positive impact on thousands of students during his time at Northern Michigan University.

If you are one of those whose life was touched by Carl, you are invited to support the Carl Holm Memorial that the committee of Jim Gadzinski, Steve Schrot, Jeff Korpi, and Dave Bonsall is spearheading. Their goal is to raise the dollars needed to purchase and place a display case near the entrance to the Northern Lights Dining Area where residence hall students pass by every day. In addition, they hope to raise enough dollars to fund an annual scholarship in Carl’s name.

The proposed display will chronicle Carl’s career and achievements and include pictures, testimonials and memorabilia on a rotating basis. The committee seeks stories, photographs, Carl Holm quips and more.

If you have memorabilia or testimonials, contact Jeff Korpi at jkorpi@nmu.edu.
