Michael Letts '84 BFA

was born in Marquette, Michigan, and is a first-generation graduate of Northern Michigan University. He received his Master of Fine Arts degree in 1986 from Ohio State University. Returning to NMU, he received a Michigan Teaching Certification in 1994. Letts taught Art and English at North Star Academy and Gwinn High School, taught as an adjunct and sabbatical replacement at the NMU School of Art and Design, and worked for NMU Engineering and Planning as a construction coordinator for the New Science Building project, until joining NMU in his current position as Profession of Art Education in 2007. As an active artist, Michael has shown in numerous state, national and international exhibitions. His work can be seen in various local businesses, including the large painting that is the centerpiece of the Zephyr Wine Bar in downtown Marquette. Michael is an avid cyclist and performing musician and songwriter. His wife, Jayne Letts '84 BS is CEO of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of the Central Upper Peninsula. Their song Jonathan '16 BS has a master's degree in Jazz Performance from the University of Michigan.
