Property and Liability Insurance

Property Insurance

The university maintains a combination insurance/self-insurance program to protect itself from “all risks” of physical loss to university owned real and personal property. Coverage is provided on a blanket replacement cost basis. The university does not provide insurance coverage for property of employees or students.

Liability Insurance

The university maintains a combination insurance/self-insurance program of legal liability insurance coverage providing protection from legal liability for the university. The Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, students and volunteers are also covered while acting on behalf of, or under the direction of the university during the performance of their duties as such. Additional information can be found on the university’s Indemnification Policy.

Third-Party Insurance for Events

NMU does not provide insurance coverage to external parties hosting events at NMU facilities. However, the University participates in a program that offers low-cost special event insurance directly to third parties using NMU spaces.

Through its membership in URMIA (University Risk Management and Insurance Association), NMU accepts insurance purchased under URMIA’s TULIP program (Tenants’ and Users’ Liability Insurance Program). Any external party or third party may purchase coverage through this program, although certain types of events are not eligible.

A guide for renters and student groups using NMU facilities is attached:
