The Department of Theatre and Dance offers employment opportunities for students in various shops and offices throughout the department. These positions provide valuable hands-on experience while supporting departmental productions and operations.
Available Positions
Students may apply for employment in the following areas:
- Box Office – House management, ushering, ticketing, and department tours
- Marketing Office – Social media management, content creation, promotional materials
- Scenic Studio – Scenery construction, painting, and installation
- Electrics Shop (eShop) – Lighting equipment maintenance, hanging, and programming
- Costume Shop – Costume construction, alterations, and wardrobe management
- Production Shop (ProShop) – General production support and project coordination
- Sound & Media Shop – Audio equipment setup, maintenance, and operation
- Wildcat Performing Arts Academy (WPAA) – Youth Theater supervisors, Youth Academy summer intensive counselors and assistance

How to Apply
Eligibility Requirements
General Requirements: - Enrolled at NMU for minimum 6 credit hours (4 for graduate students) - Making satisfactory academic progress - Available to work scheduled hours during semester
Position-Specific Requirements: - Scenic Studio or Electrics Shop (eShop): Completion of Entertainment Technology I course OR substantial previous carpentry/electrics experience. Must also attend beginning-of-year employment workshops. - Costume Shop: Basic sewing skills and knowledge - Marketing Office: Proficient computer skills and comfort with social media platforms
Work-Study Preference: Students with Federal Work-Study awards will be given preference when qualifications are equal. Students are encouraged to apply for work-study when completing their FAFSA.
Application Process
- Download and complete the General On-Campus Employment Application or meet with the supervisor of the shop you are interested in working in
- Submit completed application:
- In person: Deliver to the supervisor of the shop/office you’re applying to
- By email: Applications can be submitted in person or emailed in PDF format to the supervisor of the shop or office you're applying to or carobert@nmu.edu
- Qualified applicants will be contacted for an interview with the shop supervisor (if not already completed)
- If offered a position, complete all onboarding requirements before your first day of work

Student Employment Policies
The university strictly enforces the following work hour limits:
During Fall and Winter Semesters: - Maximum 24 hours per week - Maximum 48 hours per pay period - Students may NOT work more than these limits, even if requested
During Breaks (Thanksgiving Recess, Winter Break, Mid-Semester Recess): - Maximum 24 hours per week - Must be pre-registered for the following semester to work during Holiday Break - NOTE: Student employees will NOT work in labs or offices during these periods
Student Responsibility: Students must track their own hours and ensure they do not exceed these limits. Employment may be terminated for exceeding maximum hours.
Credit Hour Requirements: - Employment is contingent upon continuous enrollment - Must maintain minimum 6 credit hours (4 for graduate students) - If enrollment drops below minimum at any time during the semester, employment mayl be terminated
Work-Study Funding: - If using work-study funds, employment may be terminated if funding is exhausted
All student employees must accurately record their work hours using time clocks. Hours worked can be viewed in the Ultra-Time system. The department enforces a Three-Strike Policy for time entry compliance.
Time Clock Procedures
REQUIREMENT: You must have your NMU Wildcat Express Card/ID to punch in or out at the time clock.
IMPORTANT CLOCKING PROCEDURES: - Clock in immediately upon arriving to work - Clock out immediately when leaving work - Clock in/out no more than 2 minutes before or after your scheduled time - When you clock in, go directly to work – do not socialize or delay starting your duties.
How to Punch IN at the Time Clock
Follow these steps to clock in at the beginning of your shift:
- Press IN
- Swipe your NMU Wildcat Express Card/ID through the clock
- Press the Position Name/Number that applies to the job you are about to work
- Press ENTER
- When you have done this correctly, the clock will beep and display “In for the day”
How to Punch OUT at the Time Clock
Follow these steps to clock out at the end of your shift:
- Press OUT
- Swipe your NMU Wildcat Express Card/ID through the clock
- Press the Distribution Number that applies to the job you just worked
- When you have done this correctly, the clock will beep and display “Out for the day”
Note: If you only have one position code assigned to you, you may simply press IN (or OUT), swipe your NMU Wildcat Express Card/ID card, and then press ENTER. The position code number step is not required when you have only one position.
The department enforces a Three-Strike Policy for time entry compliance:
Strike One – Verbal Warning
- Supervisor enters missing hours after confirming them with you in writing
- Verbal warning issued and documented in your employment file
- Depending on timing, pay may be delayed until the next pay period
Strike Two – Written Warning
- Supervisor enters missing hours after confirmation
- Written warning issued and placed in your employment file
- Payment delayed until the following pay period
- Meeting with supervisor and administrative assistant required to discuss time entry procedures
Strike Three – Potential Termination
- Missing hours entered after confirmation
- Employment may be terminated unless extraordinary circumstances exist
- Final decision made by shop/office supervisor and department head
- Clock in and out after EVERY shift – Do not wait until the end of the pay period
- Respond promptly to reminder emails from administrative staff
- Contact your supervisor immediately if you experience technical issues with time clocks or Ultra-Time
- Ask for help if you don’t know how to use the time clocks
It is YOUR responsibility to clock in and out using time clocks every shift and to verify your time in Ultra-Time every pay period. Failure to do so creates significant administrative burden and delays for supervisors and payroll staff.
Student employees are expected to: - Arrive on time for all scheduled shifts - Notify supervisor as soon as possible if unable to work a scheduled shift - Maintain professional behavior and appearance - Follow all safety protocols and procedures - Complete assigned tasks to the best of their ability - Treat all faculty, staff, students, and equipment with respect - Adhere to all department and university policies.
Earned Sick Time Act (ESTA): All student employees accrue sick time according to Michigan’s Earned Sick Time Act. Specific call-in procedures and sick time request processes are determined by individual shop supervisors. These procedures will be reviewed during your onboarding appointment.
Emergency Absences: If you cannot work a scheduled shift due to emergency or illness: 1. Contact your supervisor as early as possible (do not wait until your shift starts) 2. Follow your shop’s specific call-in procedures 3. Complete any required ESTA request forms 4. Document your absence according to shop policies.
