Title IX

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex under any education program or activity receiving federal financial aid.  It states: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”

Title IX at NMU

Northern Michigan University is committed to providing a learning, living, and working environment free from discrimination. NMU supports the Title IX federal law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex, including: gender based discrimination, pregnancy and parenting discrimination, relationship violence (dating violence/domestic violence), sexual misconduct (sexual assault, sexual exploitation, and sex or gender-based discrimination), and stalking.

While compliance with the law is everyone's responsibility at NMU, the Title IX Office handles all inquiries of sex discrimination.  Complaints or reports against employees, student employees, students, or third parties  should be filed with the Title IX Office staff below:
