Chemistry Department AI Policy Statement
Approved on April 17, 2026
The NMU Chemistry Department is committed to preparing students to be critical thinkers, ethical scientists, and accountable citizens. Our expectation is that students and faculty will use AI in an ethical and responsible manner, with strict adherence to professional standards, including maintaining data privacy and confidentiality in compliance with federal and state regulations regarding intellectual property and privacy. Students may be asked to justify their use of AI and demonstrate understanding of course material.
To ensure academic integrity and promote effective learning, the specific guidelines for AI tools (including acceptable use, unacceptable use, citation requirements, and prohibitions) will be outlined in the syllabus of every course. Students are required to consult and comply with the instructor's policy for each course as presented in the syllabus.
