One of the most indelible images of the Vietnam War is the Pulitzer Prize-winning photo of children fleeing a napalm attack on their village. The 9-year-old girl in the center, running naked because her clothes had burned off, now dedicates her life to promoting peace and forgiveness. Kim Phuc will present “The Girl in the Picture” at Northern Michigan University. Her talk is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, in the Great Lakes Rooms of the University Center.

            After the napalm attack, the Vietnamese government subjected Phuc to endless interviews, featured her in propaganda films and forced her to leave school and move back to her province where she was supervised daily as a "national symbol of war.” She eventually continued school in Cuba before settling in Canada. Phuc, who endured several years of painful burn therapy, now lives in the Toronto area with her husband and two sons.

            There is no cost for students and a $2 fee for non-students. The presentation is sponsored by the Honors Student Organization, Platform Personalities and the NMU student activity fee.
