MEXICAN BALLET FOLKLORICO TO PERFORM AT NMU

            The Northern Michigan University International Performing Arts Series will present a performance by the Ballet Folklorico “Quetzalli” de Veracruz at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, in Kaufman Auditorium. Ticket prices are $6 for students, $15 for faculty/staff and seniors over 60 and $20 for the general public.

A free workshop by Ballet Folklorico will be held Wednesday, April 22, at 10 a.m. in the Great Lakes Room of the University Center.  The public is invited.

            Founded in 1985 in Xalapa, Veracruz, Ballet Floklorico has toured internationally performing traditional folkloric dances as well as their Afro-Caribbean piece, “Carnaval Veracruzano.” The group consists of 45 dancers, 10 musicians and operates its school and training program for young dancers in Xalapa. “Quetzalli” is known for its “visual fiesta” of culture and folklore, featuring many regional dances of old Mexico. The music will be performed live on authentic stringed instruments and is used to punctuate the dancers’ movements.

The company has been the official representative for the secretary of tourism and economic development for the State of Veracruz. Since 1986, the ensemble has given several hundred performances across Mexico, the United States, South America, Asia, Europe and the Caribbean.
