MARQUETTE, Mich.— Alberto Lomnitz, the founder of Mexico’s only deaf theater company, will give a presentation at Northern Michigan University as part of the International Visiting Scholar Series. The event will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 19, in Mead Auditorium in the West Science Building. There is no admission charge and the public is invited.

Clips from plays Lomnitz has directed will be shown at 6 p.m., followed by his presentation titled “Mexico’s Deaf Theatre Company: The Intersection of Art and the Struggle for Social Justice for the Deaf” at 7:30. Lomnitz will discuss his involvement in the company, Seña y Verbo: teatro de Sordos, and how aesthetics and social justice have intertwined. 

Lomnitz studied theater at the Terry Shreiber Studio in New York and the National Theatre of the Deaf in Connecticut. He has directed numerous productions by a wide variety of Mexican and international playwrights, including eight he penned himself. Lomnitz also has extensive experience translating English plays into Spanish.
