MARQUETTE, Mich.—Northern Michigan University’s music department is dedicating its April performances to “matron of the arts” Phyllis Reynolds, who passed away in November. She and her family contributed a gift to NMU’s first comprehensive fundraising campaign that helped to make a new campus performance venue a reality for Marquette-area music lovers. Reynolds Recital Hall is now approaching its fifth anniversary. It was dedicated with a gala concert on April 19, 2005.

            “If it hadn’t been for Mrs. Reynolds, there would be no recital hall,” said Donald Grant, head of the music department. “She was the kind of person who recognized—not only for the university but particularly for the music students—the importance of having a venue created solely for live performances that students could attend at no cost. The recital hall stands as monument to her understanding of the need and value of the arts here at Northern.”

The public is invited to attend the April performances. Each is free of charge and in Reynolds Recital Hall unless otherwise noted.

▪Thursday, April 8, and Tuesday, April 13: “The Lion, the Slave and the Rodent,” a one-act chamber opera, 7:30 p.m.

 

▪Saturday, April 10: percussion ensemble recital, 7:30 p.m.

▪Sunday, April 11: percussion studio recital, 3 p.m.

▪Thursday, April 15: NMU faculty and friends jazz combo performance, 8 p.m.

▪Friday, April 16: NMU Jazz Festival Concert featuring vocalist Kevin Mahogany, 7:30 p.m. Cost: $10 general public, $5 for NMU students with ID and $7 for other students.       

                                                                                          

▪Saturday, April 17: NMU symphonic band concert, 3 p.m.   

▪Saturday, April 17: University Choir, madrigal singers and university orchestra, 7:30 p.m.

▪Wednesday, April 21, and Thursday, April 22: Lake Effect Show Choir dinner concert, 6:30 p.m. in the University Center. Cost: $15.
