NMU PSYCHOLOGY COLLOQUIUM FRIDAY

Monday 15, 2010
MARQUETTE, Mich.—David Cooper, Northern Michigan University professor emeritus of philosophy, will present “The Use (or Abuse) of Psychological Assumptions in Theories of Economic Justice” at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19, in 167 Gries Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

After two recent conferences on economic justice and the reform of the mental health care system, Cooper said he was struck by the way different people used (or abused) psychological theory to justify some of their controversial economic assertions. He wondered whether philosophers choose their psychology to fit their theories of justice or whether their theories of justice are modified to fit their assumptions about psychology. In this presentation, he will reveal the truth and contrast libertarian psychological assumptions with assumptions behind 18th century theories of economic justice.
