MARQUETTE, Mich.—Northern Michigan University has selected a student speaker and soloist for its mid-year commencement on Saturday, Dec. 11.
Jordan Graves of Munising, Mich., will deliver the student address to NMU graduates. He is a media production and new technology major. Graves’ reaction to being chosen was disbelief.
“I thought I stood out, but I didn’t know if that was in a good way or bad way,” he said. “I didn’t believe it at first, but I’m really excited now.”
Instead of a traditional speech beginning with an inspirational quote that’s read from a piece of paper, Graves said he’s going to speak candidly about graduating, with participation from his peers.
“I’m going to talk about the post-graduate process—what to do if you’re not sure what to do, what degrees are supposed to mean and what their real value is,” Graves said. In his speech, Graves plans to advise fellow students to “go into the world with your head held high and your dreams even higher.”
Music education major Rachel Maki of Gladstone will serve as soloist for the ceremony. She will lead the audience in “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “Hail, Northern.” The commencement ceremony will be broadcast live on WNMU Public TV 13 and via free streaming video through B2 Networks at http://www.b2tv.com/. It begins at 10:30 a.m. in the Superior Dome.
