MARQUETTE, Mich.—Northern Michigan University is working with White House officials to arrange President Barack Obama’s visit to Marquette, tentatively set for Thursday, Feb. 10.

More details on his itinerary are expected to be released on Monday. Obama reportedly will talk about his administration’s initiative to extend next-generation wireless communication service to rural areas.

The Detroit Free Press quoted an anonymous White House official as saying, “The next-generation wireless network in Marquette is an effective demonstration of how the president’s proposal to open up airwaves will spark new innovation, put people back to work, grow the economy and help America win the future.”

NMU is the only university in the United States to operate its own WiMAX (4G) wireless network.
