MARQUETTE, Mich.—The Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center at Northern Michigan University presents a month-long series of events tied to its exhibition, “Across the Border: Canadians in the Upper Peninsula.” Each is free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.

            Thursday, March 10: Martin Reinhardt of the NMU Center for Native American Studies will present “The Anishinaabeg and the Border” at 7 p.m. in the West Science Building’s Mead Auditorium. An Anishinaabe Ojibway citizen of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, Reinhardt will discuss the relationship of the Anishinaabeg people with the political border that exists between Canada and the United States. He will discuss the changes to that border over time, both physically and politically, and how it has changed the relationships of the Anishinaabeg people who live on both sides of the St. Mary’s River.

 

            Saturday, March 12: International Performing Arts Series concert featuring Canadian folk-pop duo Dala, 7:30 p.m. in Forest Roberts Theatre. Tickets required. For more information, visit www.nmu.edu/performingarts.

 

Thursday, March 17: St. Patrick’s Day Ceilidh, a Gaelic social gathering with music, dancing, poetry and storytelling, 7-9 p.m. at the Dance Zone, 1113 Lincoln Ave. in Marquette. Admission: $2 students; $5 adults; free for young children with parents. Bring a dish to pass.

 

Thursday, March 24: “French Canadians in Michigan” presentation by Jean LaMarre of the Royal Military College of Canada, 7 p.m. in Mead Auditorium. LaMarre will discuss the forces that led to emigration from Quebec and other parts of Canada and why French Canadians chose to come to the Upper Peninsula.  His lecture will focus on communities that have prevalent French-Canadian populations, in particular, Lake Linden.
