MARQUETTE, Mich.—Northern Michigan University will mark the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day and celebrate Women’s History Month with a series of March activities. This year’s theme is “Our History is Our Strength.” All events are open to the public and free, unless otherwise noted.

            March 7: Women in Politics presentation by Professor Ruth Watry, 2-3:40 p.m., Starbucks Lounge in the Learning Resources Center.

March 11: NMU distinguished women faculty presentation, featuring Tawni Ferrarini, Jill Leonard, Eileen Smit and moderator Christine Flavin, 1-2 p.m., Superior Room, University Center.

March 12: Canadian folk-pop duo Dala, 7:30 p.m. Forest Roberts Theatre. Tickets required. For more information, visit www.nmu.edu/performingarts. 

            March 14: NPR national security and FBI correspondent Dina Temple-Raston, 7:30 p.m., University Center Great Lakes Rooms. Free for NMU students; $2 for general public.

            March 16: Guerilla Girls, 7:30 p.m., Jamrich 102. These anonymous females take the names of dead women artists as pseudonyms and appear in public wearing gorilla masks. They have produced posters, stickers, books, printed projects and actions that expose sexism and racism in politics, art, film and the culture at large. The Guerilla Girls use humor to convey information, provoke discussion and show that feminists can be funny. They wear gorilla masks to “focus on the issues rather than our personalities.”

March 21: Iron-Jawed Angels movie, 7 p.m. Jamrich 103.

March 22: Native American artist and author Lois Beardslee, 7 p.m., Jamrich 102. Also, a self-identity panel sponsored by Women for Women, 7 p.m., Jamrich 103.

March 23: Women for Women present “Hear Us Roar: Prevent Sexual Assault,” 7 p.m., Jamrich 103.

March 24: Open Mic Night, 9 p.m. to midnight, Woodland Park Apartments multi-purpose room.

March 25: Native American author Linda Hogan will speak at the Indigenous Earth Summit, 1 p.m., Whitman Commons. Also, Dr. Susan Amato-Henderson will present a psychology colloquium at 3 p.m. in 167 Gries Hall.

March 28: Native American author Linda LeGarde Grover, 7 p.m., Whitman Commons.

March 29: Staged reading of “Professions for Women” by Virginia Woolf, 4 p.m., University Center Cadillac Room.

March 30: The Shape of Water movie, 7 p.m., Mead Auditorium.

March 31: Native American Dr. Tina Cooper will speak as part of the Medicine Wheel Academy at NMU, 7 p.m. Mead Auditorium.
