MARQUETTE, Mich.—The Michigan Civil Rights Commission will hold a public forum titled “Bullying: Getting to the real problems” from 3-5 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, in Reynolds Recital Hall in Northern Michigan University’s C.B. Hedgcock building.

            In the first hour, a panel of experts will give a series of brief presentations. Panelists and topics are: Alan McEvoy, sociology and social work department head at NMU, on bullying issues and bullying of students by adults in educational settings; Dee Lindenberger, educator and trainer, on the need for training educators on bullying prevention and intervention; Bob Willman, high school principal, approaches to address peer aggression; Carolyn Heitamaki, Michigan Nurses Association, workplace bullying; Dan Settlemyre and Chris West, North Star Academy seniors, bystander perspectives on student behavior in high school and the need for interventions with bullies; Luanne Peterson, special education director, Marquette Alger Regional Educational Service Agency, bullying and students with special needs; Detective Sgt. Steve Snowaert, Marquette Police Department and former police/school liaison officer, cyberbullying; and Kevin Rush, NMU student and resident adviser, bullying and the realities of college life.

From 4-5 p.m., the public is invited to give testimony on the topic. No registration is required to testify at the event. Written testimony is also being accepted through Thursday, March 31, at millerj31@Michigan.gov

The forum may be videotaped. Footage and images may be used in other venues.
