Marquette General, NMU to host Upper Peninsula Sports Concussion Summit April 29

 

MARQUETTE--To address the growing concern of sports concussions in the Upper Peninsula, Marquette General and Northern Michigan University have teamed up to co-sponsor the Upper Peninsula Sports Concussion Summit. The event is scheduled from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. on Friday, April 29, 2011, at UpFront & Company in downtown Marquette.

 

The Upper Peninsula Sports Concussion Summit is designed to present key issues in sports-related concussions including a discussion forum on implications for practice in the clinical and sideline settings. The Summit will enhance knowledge of participants related to concussion and draw together key leaders to establish standards on concussive treatment.

 

This educational opportunity is intended for physicians, nurses, therapists, athletic trainers, EMS and athletic directors who work with concussed athletes, on athletic sidelines, or in athletics decisions-making.

 

To kick off the Summit, guest speaker Mark Lovell, PhD, will present on the current concussion management guidelines and state legislative efforts across the nation. Lovell is an internationally recognized sports concussion expert and founding director of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Sports Medicine Concussion Program, and is developer of the Impact concussion management software. Other speakers and topics include:

 

·         “Complicated Case Discussions,” by a panel of UP experts.

·         “The Olympic Experience as a Physician,” by Marquette General Sports Medicine Physician, Dr. John Lehtinen.

·         “Concussions in the Youth Athlete,” by Dr. Alexis Wolfe, of Dickinson County Health Care System.

·         “Current Concussion Policies in Michigan,” by Northern Michigan University Athletic Training Center Program Director Julie Rochester, EdD, AT, and NMU Athletic Training Center Clinical Coordinator, Chris Kirk, MS, AT.

·         “Discussion Forum: Implementing a Sports Concussion Standard of Care for the UP,” moderated by Jan Hillman, Marquette General executive, and the UP expert panel.

 

The conference fee of $90 includes program, light breakfast and lunch. Marquette General and NMU employees may attend for a discounted rate of $50. Students may attend for a discounted rate of $25.
