MARQUETTE, Mich.—Northern Michigan University’s DeVos Art Museum will unveil three new exhibits on Friday, June 3. An opening reception is scheduled from 6-8 p.m. Admission is free.

            “North of the 45th Parallel” is an annual juried exhibition open to artists from Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin who live north of the 45th parallel. Juror Lisa Stone, curator of the Roger Brown Study Collection at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, will give a talk from 5-6 p.m. Friday, June 3, in the museum.

             “Loose Connections” is a stitched paper installation by Chicago-based artist Judith Brotman. The objects hover between sculpture and drawing and present themselves between the polarities of delicate and menacing. Brotman received an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she is an adjunct assistant professor.

The third exhibit is titled “Transiessence: work by NMU School of Art and Design Students from the SaloneSatellite Exhibition.” In April, 17 human-centered design students exhibited their prototypes at SaloneSatellite in Milan, Italy. NMU was one of 17 design schools worldwide invited to participate in this prestigious exhibition of young, noteworthy designers. The students developed their own prototypes, constructed three large shipping crates to send them to Italy and designed the graphics for promotional materials and a website. The 17 prototypes will be featured in the DeVos Art Museum.

“North of the 45th Parallel” runs through July 24. The other two exhibits will close July 17. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday; and 1-5 p.m. weekends.
