MARQUETTE—Northern Michigan University will hold an informational meeting on study-abroad opportunities in Cuba. Two sessions will be offered on Thursday, Sept. 29, and Tuesday, Oct. 4. Both meetings will be at 6 p.m. in Pioneer Room A in the University Center. Students from other Upper Peninsula colleges and universities are eligible to participate in the Cuba program. NMU student Natasha Gallagher will talk about her experience there last winter.

NMU’s study-abroad program is based at the University of Matanzas, located about 60 miles from Cuba’s capital, Havana. All courses are taught in Spanish. Students who are fluent may study one or two semesters. Students who are not can study Spanish for the fall semester and take other courses during the winter semester. Course areas include physical education, social sciences, humanities, agriculture, chemistry, economics and engineering/computer science.           

            When NMU launched the program in January, it was one of only 16 U.S. institutions granted a license to offer study-abroad programs in Cuba and the first to extend its presence outside of Havana.
