GEOLOGICAL SURVEY DISCUSSED

Friday 30, 2011
MARQUETTE, Mich.— Local historian Don Balmer will present “University of Michigan Geological Survey, 1868” at Northern Michigan University. The event begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, in Mead Auditorium in the West Science Building. Admission is free.

In 1868, a group of scientists from the University of Michigan toured Lake Superior to study the region’s geological history. During their tour, they visited the Upper Peninsula and took many photographs of the region, several of which were three-dimensional. Balmer will give details of the expedition’s visit to the region and show several images taken by the group.

The Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center is sponsoring the lecture as part of the U.P. Folklife Festival.
