MARQUETTE, Mich.—Northern Michigan University will host a presentation titled “Social Work in a Very Rural Place: A Study of Practitioners in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.” Emery Mackie, social work program director at Minnesota State University, will be the guest lecturer. The talk is scheduled at 3:10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, in 167 Gries Hall.

            Mackie will discuss a study on the characteristics of social workers practicing in the Upper Peninsula. The mixed-methods research involved surveys and interviews about why they work in such a rural area, the challenges and joys of rural practice and their descriptions of living in such a remote place.
