MARQUETTE, Mich.—Northern Michigan University’s DeVos Art Museum will host its annual exhibition highlighting artists who live in or are heavily influenced by the Upper Peninsula beginning Friday, March 2. This year’s “UP Focus” show features the work of Susanne Kilpela, Carol Phillips and Russ Prather.

            The artists “walk the line between abstraction and representation through imagined scenery and narratives. A sense of wonder and mystery can be found in both two and three dimensions, balancing the light and dark sides of human nature and imagination.” Kilpela is based in Hancock and teaches in the Michigan Technological University visual and performing arts department. Phillips is based in Marquette. She directs the Liberty Children’s Art Project in Big Bay and serves as curator at the Marquette Arts and Culture Center. Prather, also from Marquette, is an English professor at NMU.

            The trio will lead a tour of the exhibit at 6 p.m. Friday, April 6. A closing reception will follow until 8 p.m.

            Admission to the museum is free. Regular hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Wednesday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and 1-4 p.m. weekends.
