NMU Holds Campaign and Leadership Training Conference

Tuesday 28, 2012

MARQUETTE, Mich.— Northern Michigan University will hold its third “Elect Her” Conference from 5-9 p.m. Tuesday, March 13 in room 109 of the Learning Resources Center.  U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow will be the conference’s keynote speaker via Internet stream.

The free event focuses on training young people, particularly women, in the skills needed to campaign for an elected office and to take on university leadership roles, such as serving on their school’s student government. Elect Her training is sponsored by American Association of University Women and Running Start, a non-partisan program that financially supports young women running for federal office.

“We’re training women to bridge the gender leadership gap by starting early,” said Linda Hallman, AAUW executive director. “By encouraging and supporting more women to be political leaders on their own campuses, we are helping to set them up for success in leadership roles later.”

NMU was selected as one of 30 campus sites across the United States and Jamaica to host a 2012 Elect Her Conference. In the two years of providing Elect Her training, NMU conference attendees have had a 100 percent success rate in running for Associated Students of Northern Michigan University (ASNMU) student government positions.
