MARQUETTE, Mich.—Frederick Nelson, a member of the 2007 Nobel Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and Northern Michigan University alumnus, will return to his alma mater to present “The Unintended Research Legacies of John Munro Longyear.” His talk begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, in Mead Auditorium in the West Science Building. It is free and open to the public.

            Longyear was known as a successful entrepreneur, but Nelson will focus on his significant contributions to education and science. Longyear founded the Upper Peninsula’s Huron Mountain Club and the Arctic Coal Company on the islands of Svarbard, now an important permafrost research area.
