MARQUETTE, Mich.—The next Northern Michigan University psychology colloquium will be “The Classification of Mental Illness in the 18th Century: A Comparison of the Nosologies of Carl Linnaeus, Francois Bossier de Sauvages, Rudolpho Vogel and William Cullen.” Heather Munsche, a master’s degree candidate, will be the presenter. Her talk is scheduled at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, in 301 Gries Hall. The public is invited.

            The 18th century was an age of classification led by Linnaeus, who developed the system for separating living things into kingdoms, families, orders and classes. He also attempted to classify all known human diseases. This presentation will focus on his work related to mental disorders and compare it with that of his contemporaries to see where definitions of mental illness remained consistent or diverged across European cultures.
