NMU Student Video Contest Winners Announced

MARQUETTE, Mich.—Northern Michigan University has announced the winners of its NMU Tube Video Contest. Students were invited to create a short video based on one of five categories that represent the Northern experience. A campus-wide vote of the top finishers in each category determined the overall grand-prize winner.

Michael Harrington, a senior art and design major from Alanson, and Keith Wilson, a senior art and design major from Wauconda, Ill., won the $1,000 grand prize. Their “My NMU Adventure” video also placed first in the category by the same name.

The prize money for the top three in each category was $500 for first, $250 for second and $100 for third. Here are the remaining results by category titles:

My NMU Adventure: Carolyn Tobin, a senior from Dewitt with a double major in media production and new technology and Spanish, won second place for “My NMU Greek Life.” Emma Wolfe, a junior history secondary education major from Marietta, Ga., was third with “My NMU—A Personal Experience.”

Northern. Naturally. (environment): Alex Maier, a freshman art and design major from Delafield, Ill., placed first for “My NMU: Northern Naturally”; Tobin also finished second in this category with “My NMU: Favorite Season.” Kelly Shaheen, a senior elementary education major from Ada, and Steven Goulding, a senior earth science secondary education major from Grand Rapids, earned third for their video that shares the category name.

Northern. Naturally. (personality): Joseph Neiderhauser, a freshman art and design major from Hudson, Wis., came in first for  “My NMU: Our Campus Has Personality.” Five students produced the second-place video, “My NMU: Northern Girls”: Christopher Moriarty, a freshman fisheries and wildlife management major from West Bloomfield; Sandor Heistan, an undeclared freshman from Hudson; Zachary Gentner, a computer science freshman from Marquette; Jacob Lancaster, an undeclared freshman from Pittsford; and Christopher Gomez, a sophomore criminal justice major from Alpena. Tobin scored another top-three category finish by coming in third with “My NMU Place of Unexpected Excitement.”

‘Cats on the Prowl (success story): Derek Malpass, a freshman art and design major from Charlevoix, and Levi Warnos, a junior English major from East Jordan, finished first with “My NMU, My NMU Adventure.” Katharine Haring, a senior art and design major from New Lenox, Ill., placed second for “myNMU: Achievements.” Cody Ross, a senior art and design major from Novi, won third with “Cat on the Prowl: Mitch Steinmetz.”

Ross also won the only prize awarded in the How the Big Lake Moves You category for his own take on “How the Big Lake Moves Me.”
