MARQUETTE, Mich.—Actors-educators from the Stratford Shakespeare Festival will offer a Shakespeare workshop on Tuesday, Oct. 23, at Northern Michigan University. The workshop will be held from 2-4 p.m. in Jamrich Hall 101. It is free and open to the public.

            Workshop leaders will work interactively with teachers and students on using drama-based strategies to approach, understand and connect to Shakespeare’s works. They will show students how to get on their feet and speak to unlock meaning in Shakespeare’s texts in ways that reading silently at their desks never can.

            The workshop is sponsored by the NMU English department, Passages North literary magazine, Sigma Tau Delta, the Westwood Shakespeare Company and the Stratford Shakespeare Festival Michigan Education and Outreach Initiative. The latter states that its goal is to explore “innovative drama techniques for teaching English, and to provide an opportunity for teachers to meet with and share experiences with peers from other schools. The Education Department of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival brings a wealth of experience from its extremely successful programs with Canadian schools. This is a chance to have Michigan classrooms benefit as well from this marvelous resource just across the border.”
