Hockey for Hope Tourney Scheduled
MARQUETTE, Mich. — Northern Michigan University’s Student Leader Fellowship Program is putting on a charity three-on-three hockey tournament for the Marquette Women’s Center from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Berry Events Center.
Players of all ages who are USA Hockey-registered can sign up by Monday, Nov. 26, by contacting hockeyforhope2012@gmail.com. The registration fee is $10 per player. The public is invited to watch the tourney. Entry is by a donation of money or needed supplies. Some of the items on the Women’s Center donation list include non-perishable food, laundry supplies, toiletries, bedding, diaper wipe, trash bags and other household items. The event will feature family-friendly activities such as face painting, a silent auction and a chance to win a ride on the Zamboni.
“The center is constantly running out of supplies, so we wanted to help,” said Liz Klarecki, a student enrolled in the leadership theory and practice course.
The Student Leader Fellowship Program is a two-year, nationally recognized leadership development program. The program is dedicated to developing community-centered leaders who are ethical and competent. The SLFP provides student fellows with a series of skill builders and with a mentor who helps the fellows develop their leadership skills. They are also required to do a community-based project for their leadership class.
