'Elect Her' Event at NMU

Monday 11, 2013

MARQUETTE, Mich.—Northern Michigan University is one of 39 institutions nationwide and in Jamaica that will host “Elect Her: Campus Women Win,” a free training program that encourages college women to run for student government. It will be held from 12:30-5 p.m. Saturday, March 16, in the University Center Pioneer Rooms.

Marquette County Probate Judge Cheryl Hill will share her campaign experiences and why she chose to become a public official. Nancy Bocskor, an Elect Her facilitator, will address the importance of young women running for office and lead a campaign simulation exercise. Other speakers will discuss the nuts and bolts of running for NMU student government, crafting and communicating campaign messages and reaching out to mobilize voters on campus.  Exercises will teach students to identify key issues and build a campaign team. The event is also open to male students and includes lunch and a networking reception, both of which are free to participants.

Elect Her is a collaboration between the American Association of University Women and Running Start. It is designed to address the disparity between the high percentage of women enrolled at colleges and universities and their low representation in student government.
