MARQUETTE, Mich.—The Northern Nights series at Northern Michigan University will host BlackMahal, a San Francisco-based live music experience. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, in the Great Lakes Room of the University Center.

            BlackMahal is a part P-Funk, part Punjabi-Funk band that incorporates drums, DJs, horns, hip-hop MCs and the godfather of Punjabi-American music, Ustad Lal Singh Bhatti. BlackMahal represents the new California feel: hippie hybrid hip-hop and hysterical hijinks. It has performed major concerts across North America, including the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. BlackMahal has also been featured in Rolling Stone, which stated, “Their sound is perhaps unlike anything else out there today… It’s awesome.”

The Northern Nights series is in its 25th season and is funded in part by a grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, with support from the Ramada Inn. This event is open to the public. Tickets are available at all NMU EZ Ticket outlets. Prices are: students, $5 advance/$7 at the door; NMU employees/seniors 60+, $13/$15; and general public, $18/$20.
