Film on Calumet Tragedy Screened at DeVos

Tuesday 15, 2013

MARQUETTE— The DeVos Art Museum at Northern Michigan University will screen 1913 Massacre, a film about Calumet’s Italian Hall disaster, at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26. Admission is free. There will be a question-and-answer session with the filmmakers immediately afterward.

The film focuses on the Italian Hall tragedy, in which 75 people were killed in a stampede at a Christmas celebration. It also discusses the mining protests that occurred during this event, which left Calumet grieving during a time of poor working conditions, low wages and working-class struggles.

This event is sponsored in part by the AAUP and Save the Wild U.P. For more information, contact Melissa Matuscak at 227-2355.
