MARQUETTE, Mich.—Former Broadway actor and Northern Michigan University theater professor Paul Truckey will play Jean Valjean in the NMU production of Les Misérables. This new production of Boubil and Schonberg’s musical will run Wednesday, Nov. 13, through Saturday, Nov. 16, in Forest Roberts Theatre. The show begins at 7:30 p.m., with an additional 1 p.m. matinee on Saturday.

Les Misérables is based on the novel of the same name. It takes place in 19th century France. Valjean is released from 19 years of unjust imprisonment, but finds nothing in store for him but mistrust and mistreatment. He breaks his parole in hopes of starting a new life, but is pursued by Police Inspector Javert, who refuses to believe that Valjean can change his ways. In the end, however, Javert must confront his ideas about Valjean in the gripping conclusion of this international hit.

            The musical had its world premiere in 1980 in Paris and the material was later adapted into English for an extended run on London’s West End and in New York City, where it was the third longest-running musical in Broadway history.

            Les Mis is directed by Ansley Valentine. In addition to Truckey, other actors in lead roles are: NMU students Jerimie Newcomb as Javert, Sara Parks as Cosette and Jesse Morrow as Eponine. Erin Resteiner is Fantine and Ethan Bott, a Marquette Senior High School student, plays Marius.

Tickets are $15 for general admission, $10 for students and $5 for NMU students. They can be purchased at any NMU EZ Ticket outlet.
