International Anthropologist Addresses Climate Change

Friday 15, 2013

MARQUETTE—Myanna Lahsen, a senior researcher at the Brazilian Institute for Space Research, will give a presentation at Northern Michigan University titled “International Variation in Anti-Environmentalism: Climate Change Politics and Policy in the U.S. and Brazil.” The event is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, in Mead Auditorium in the West Science Building.

The presentation will ask the questions: What information about climate change do different national publics receive from their news media? Does it vary, and how does it matter what issues are debated and how they are framed?  Is "climate skepticism" or "-denialism" a cross-cultural phenomenon? This talk tackles these questions on the basis of empirical research performed in the U.S. and international, with special attention to anti-environmentalism in the U.S. and Brazil.

Lahsen is a cultural anthropologist whose work focuses on the relations between environmentalism, public policy and mass communications. She is currently an editor for WIREs Climate Change, an interdisciplinary research journal, and has received several research fellowships. She attended NMU in 1987.

The event is sponsored by NMU's Office of the President and the departments of Communication and Performance Studies; Earth, Environmental and Geographical Sciences;and Sociology and Anthropology.
