NMU Day of Service, Guest Speaker Honor Martin Luther King Jr.

            MARQUETTE, Mich.—Volunteer service opportunities and a presentation by a guest speaker, the Rev. Dr. Jamie Washington, will highlight the Martin Luther King Jr. observance at Northern Michigan University.

            The volunteer projects will take place when classes are not in session on Monday, Jan. 20. Most are scheduled in the afternoon and run about three hours. They include building houses for Habitat for Humanity, helping with animals up for adoption at UPAWS, hosting bingo at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans, writing letters to soldiers and elected officials, knitting/crocheting for people in need and painting chairs at the U.P. Children’s Museum. Transportation will be provided to the sites and participants are invited to gather in the NMU University Center afterward at 5 p.m. for reflection and a discussion of civil rights and volunteerism.             The Rev. Dr. Jamie Washington will give a presentation on the civil rights movement and the current state of America at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, in the Marquette/Nicolet Rooms of the University Center. He is president and founder of the Washington Consulting Group, a multicultural organizational development firm in Baltimore, Md. He also has 20 years' experience in higher education instruction and administration.
