Policy Experts Debate Marijuana

Wednesday 26, 2014

Marquette, Mich. —Northern Michigan University will host a debate between two high-profile policy experts titled “Legalize It? Marijuana Policy Experts Debate Reefer Policy.” The event begins at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 31, in 102 Jamrich Hall. It is free for NMU students with ID and $2 for the general public.

The debate pits Kevin Sabet, a proponent of anti-drug legislation, against Aaron Houston, a  marijuana legalization advocate. Sabet served under President Barack Obama from 2009-2011 at the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy as the senior advisor to director Gil Kerlikowske. He now directs Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM), which he co-founded. He also founded Policy Solutions Lab, a policy consulting company. Houston, a nationally recognized expert on drug policy, works as the executive director of Students for Sensible Drug Policy and is co-founder of Marijuana Majority. From 2005-2010, he served on Capitol Hill as the only full-time marijuana legalization lobbyist. His work was depicted in the 2007 Showtime original documentary, In Pot We Trust.
