MARQUETTE, Mich.—Northern Michigan University will host a simulcast presentation of “Returning Veterans: A Health Care Conference for Providers.” The goal is to provide an educational resource for professionals to better address the behavioral health issues of returning service members and their families.

The conference runs from 7:30 a.m. to noon EST Thursday, April 24, in room 109 of the Learning Resources Center. There is no fee to attend, but advance registration is required at www.surveymonkey.com/s/Returning/Veterans. The activity offers continuing education credits for physicians, nurses and social workers, marriage counselors and family therapists. It is sponsored by the Michigan Area Health Education Center at Wayne State University, which has established an Upper Peninsula Regional Center at NMU.

Topics covered will include military culture; common behavioral health issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder, military sexual trauma, depression and suicide; signs and symptoms of traumatic brain injury; common deployment-related exposures; arranging referrals to the Department of Veterans Affairs; and the benefits and enrollment process for VA health care.

Presenters represent the John Dingell Veterans Administration Medical Center and WSU’s Schools of Medicine and Social Work.
