Student Commencement Speaker, Soloist Named
MARQUETTE, Mich.--Courtney Brown of Midland will be the student speaker at Northern Michigan University’s commencement on Saturday, May 4. She will graduate with a bachelor’s degree with a triple major in French, English and theater and entertainment arts.
“I love NMU, from the natural setting to the warm people to the great university atmosphere. There have always been faculty and staff who have supported my ideas and study plans,” said Brown. “Speaking at commencement is a way to celebrate with every graduate in their success and memories of NMU. I want to create a sentiment that recognizes both their diverse achievements and empowers them to leave NMU to pursue further greatness.”
Brown lists the theme of her speech as, “Remembering the positive and fun aspects of being a student at NMU, while also recognizing how our studies have prepared us to achieve a lifetime of success and redefine how people describe the millennial generation.”
The commencement soloist will be Sara Parks of Marquette. She is a music education major and was recently nominated as the music department’s outstanding graduating senior. Parks will lead the audience in the singing of the national anthem and “Hail Northern.”
The graduation ceremony will take place at 10:30 a.m. in the Superior Dome. It will be broadcast live on WNMU-TV regionally and streamed live in high definition online free of charge through the America One/B2 networks. To see the ceremony, follow the link at www.nmu.edu/commencement.
