          MARQUETTE, Mich.—Northern Michigan University will offer an environmental science camp for high school students July 27-Aug. 2. Participants will explore the scenic vistas and natural resources of the Upper Peninsula while learning how scientists incorporate technology and field experiences to study the changing environment.

Students will paddle the AuTrain River and cruise on Lake Superior to monitor water quality issues; explore the landforms, vegetation and archaeology of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore; tour a local mine to learn where minerals originate, how they are extracted and how mining affects the environment and society; understand the role of the Great Lakes in shipping resources; learn how people have interacted for thousands of years with the U.P. landscapes; and experience modern-day Marquette while learning about urban planning, historical aspects of urban growth and human impact on the environment as cities grow.

The NMU Seaborg Center and the earth, environmental and geographical sciences department are guiding the program.

The registration fee covers all costs associated with lodging, meals and field experiences using the facilities and technologies of NMU. It is $505 through June 1 and $605 after that date. To register, visit www.nmu.edu/environmentalcamp.
