Artist Gives Talk at NMU

Tuesday 2, 2014

MARQUETTE, Mich.--Chicago-based woodworker and sculptor Mike Rea will give a presentation at Northern Michigan University on Friday, Sept 5. His talk begins at 6 p.m. in room AD165 of the Art and Design Building. It will be followed by a reception at the DeVos Art Museum to celebrate the opening of Rea’s solo exhibition, Scenes of Sights and Sights of Scenes. Both events are free.

Rea’s art “blends familiar images and ideas from pop culture with reinvented imitations of memory.” His NMU show includes several new pieces that are presented like individual scenes or theater sets throughout the gallery. It will be on display through Dec. 12.

The museum also will host a special concurrent exhibition inspired by Rea’s work titled LARGER THAN FICTION: Selections from the Museum’s Permanent Art Collection. Influenced by Rea’s “Prosthetic Suit for Stephen Hawking with Japanese Steel,” the show features selections of illustrations from 1960s comic book and science fiction book covers.
