French-Canadian Heritage Events Planned

MARQUETTE, Mich.— Marquette is participating in the statewide celebration of French-Canadian Heritage Week with a film showing, interactive presentations and a historical walking tour. The schedule follows.

Friday, Oct. 3: The celebration begins with the film, The Rocket: The Legend of Rocket Richard, about the famed hockey player who spent 18 seasons with the Montreal Canadiens. It will be shown at 7 p.m. in the community room of Peter White Public Library.  It is part of CineArts Films and sponsored by the Friends and Carroll Paul Memorial Trust Fund of the Peter White Public Library.  Admission is free. 

Saturday, Oct. 4: From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Marquette Regional History Center will feature various events such as an interactive voyageur program, a logging culture presentation and an open house in the J.M. Longyear Research Library. Additionally, there will be a French-Canadian walking tour of Marquette starting at 1 p.m. The tour features some of the significant historical sites, buildings and homes related to the French-Canadian citizens of Marquette. It will be led by members of the French-Canadian Heritage Group of Marquette. Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children. 

The events are sponsored by the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center at NMU, Marquette Regional History Center, Peter White Public Library and the City of Marquette Arts and Culture Division.
